The Continuing Professional Education

The International Division Heads have reworked the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours earnings and outline to accommodate the members. The basic requirement is essentially the same, but members will be able to accumulate their hours over a 2-year period (for example January 2009 to December 2010). At the end of the 2-year period 32 CPE hours are required but they can be earned anytime during this 2-year period. The advantage is that members may attend, for example, a four-day course which would count for the total required 32 CPE hours within this 2-year period. These CPE requirements will be in effect (retrospectively) as of 01 January 2008.

The following will count towards CPE hours:

  • Informational seminars presented for members by the IEBWA (all hours of attendance accepted) Any courses with Equinology Inc (or sister company, or IEBWA approved school courses; all hours of attendance accepted)

  • Attendance at an informational seminar (many local universities, colleges and equine organizations present these free or charge), workshop , conference or course on equine health-related topics not presented by Equinology Inc (or sister companies, or IEBWA approved school courses). Check with your division head or your EC prior to the activity, who will liaise with other divisions in other to determine eligibility.

  • Currently enrolled and participating in a science program (BSc, BS, AS or similar) with a focus on equine studies such as an equine science, veterinary technician, or equine sports therapy degree. Proof of ongoing enrolment required to fulfill the annual CPE requirement.

  • Participation in a massage course or complementary therapy modality for humans or domestic animals. Members must first clear the course with division head or your EC who will liaison with each other to determine eligibility.

  • Publication of an article on Equine Body Work in a peer reviewed journal (will contribute 1 hour per article towards mandatory hours, with a total of 10 hours being maximum claim for articles to fulfill the 2-year CPE requirement). This applies to scientific journals only, and not to contributions for riding magazines and the like.

  • Attendance at courses with a focus on business management. Total hours claimed may not exceed 16 hours when submitting CPE requirements over the 2 year period.

  • Volunteer work using body work for a community-based agency/project whose focus is on horses, for example, work for RSPCA, Horse Sanctuary or Association Recognized Therapeutic Riding Program. Total hours claimed may not exceed 12 hours when submitting CPE requirements for the 2-year time period.

  • Participating as an observer or completing an internship with a recognized equine health professional such as a licensed equine chiropractor, equine acupuncturist, equine veterinarian surgeon, equine osteopath, equine dentist or specialty veterinarian. Members must check with their division head or your EC who will liaise with the other divisions to determine eligibility. Total hours claimed may not exceed 16 hours when submitting CPE requirements over the 2 year period.

  • Any approved online courses for a total of 32 hours for the 2-year CPE requirement. These courses must be first approved by all IEBWA division heads.

Note: it is the responsibility of the IEBWA member to inform the relevant division head/administrative office of CPE hours completed during the preceeding year, at time of membership renewal. This has to be done through completion of the CPE form that is available for download from the IEBWA site. Completed renewal forms must henceforth be accompanied by a copy of current valid indemnity insurance and proof of CPE completed during the preceeding year. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. In case of doubt, please contact your local division for additional clarification.
